The Good, The Vlad, The Uggla- (Rounds 1-13)

Round 1
1. Hanley Ramírez
2. Albert Pujols
3. Álex Rodríguez
4. Chase Utley
5. Ryan Braun
6. Matt Kemp
7. Prince Fielder
8. Tim Lincecum
9. Joe Mauer
10. Roy Halladay

Round 2
1. Carl Crawford
2. Ryan Howard
3. M. Cabrera
4. Mark Teixeira
5. Evan Longoria
6. David Wright
7. Matt Holliday
8. Jimmy Rollins
9. A. González
10. T. Tulowitzki

The steal of this round was Mark Teixeira. Lock him up for 100 runs, 40 homers, and 100 RBIS. Brian grabbing him with the 14th overall pick was great value. BAM. He’s in shape.

Round 3
1. Felix Hernández
2. Justin Upton
3. CC Sabathia
4. Ian Kinsler
5. Jacoby Ellsbury
6. Justin Morneau
7. Zack Greinke
8. R. Zimmerman
9. Dustin Pedroia
10. Robinson Canó

Justin Morneau 3rd round selection by Jim was a little earlier than usual but it is hard to argue against a consistant 100+ RBI threat. Also, good value for Brian with Greinke who some experts have as the second pitcher off the board. It is be interesting to see if he will come back to the pack after last year’s Cy Young season.

Round 4
1. Kevin Youkilis
2. Curtis Granderson
3. José Reyes
4. Grady Sizemore
5. Víctor Martínez
6. Brian McCann
7. Justin Verlander
8. Pablo Sandoval
9. Mark Reynolds
10. Joey Votto

This round brought the end of the 1st tier catchers. Curtis Granderson may be a reach in the beginning of the 4th round for Justin but moving to the Yankees might allow for his breakout year. If Jose Reyes regains his 1st round form he will be a steal here for Shane. But he could also be one of the biggest busts again this year after last year’s debacle. PS nobody trusts Mark Reynolds except Jules.

Round 5
1. Aramis Ramírez
2. Josh Hamilton
3. Ichiro Suzuki
4. Derek Jeter
5. Brandon Phillips
6. Ben Zobrist
7. Jayson Werth
8. Andrew McCutchen
9. Jon Lester
10. Dan Haren

Derek Jeter falling to the 5th round was a nice surprise for me. Ben Zobrist moving up to the 5th round makes me want to vomit a little. And McCutchen in the 5th makes me want to laugh for a long, long time.

Round 6
1. Jonathan Broxton
2. Mariano Rivera
3. Jonathan Papelbon
4. Adam Wainwright
5. B.J. Upton
6. Joakim Soria
7. Johan Santana
8. Matt Wieters
9. Tommy Hanson
10. Nick Markakis

Round 7
1. Carlos Lee
2. Clayton Kershaw
3. Aaron Hill
4. Jason Bay
5. Kendry Morales
6. Andre Ethier
7. Brian Roberts
8. Yovani Gallardo
9. Bobby Abreu
10. Billy Butler

When Jules went back to back Hanson and Kershaw picks before more established pitchers like Beckett, Carpenter, Peavy, Hamels were off the board it was a bit of a stretch. Depending on the outcome of the season it will tell if this was the right decision. I’m sad to say that Aaron Hill was a nice very pick for Brandon in Round 7.

Round 8
1. Adam Lind
2. Cliff Lee
3. Josh Beckett
4. Chris Carpenter
5. Josh Johnson
6. Javier Vázquez
7. Lance Berkman
8. Jake Peavy
9. Gordon Beckham
10. Cole Hamels

Round 9
1. Chone Figgins
2. Heath Bell
3. Carlos Peña
4. Adam Jones
5. Ricky Nolasco
6. Matt Cain
7. Nelson Cruz
8. Jason Bartlett
9. Alexei Ramírez
10. Shin-Soo Choo

Round 10
1. Adam Dunn
2. Jorge Cantú
3. Denard Span
4. Michael Young
5. Derrek Lee
6. Hunter Pence
7. Wandy Rodríguez
8. Francisco Rodríguez
9. Asdrubal Cabrera
10. Brandon Webb

Ty took a nice flyer on Brandon Webb with the last pick in the 10th round. If he is anywhere near his pre injury form he will be an absolute steal at pick 100. Seeing names like Jason Bartlett, Denard Span, and Jorge Cantu off the board before players like Manny Ramirez, Chipper Jones, and Derek Lee is like taking the prestigious careers of these aging superstars and flushing them down the toilet. HEART BREAK CITY.

Round 11
1. Andrew Bailey
2. Jair Jurrjens
3. Shane Victorino
4. José Valverde
5. Yunel Escobar
6. John Lackey
7. Ubaldo Jiménez
8. Matt Garza
9. A.J. Burnett
10. Brett Anderson

Round 12
1. Max Scherzer
2. Magglio Ordóñez
3. Dan Uggla
4. Elvis Andrus
5. Francisco Cordero
6. Jay Bruce
7. Chipper Jones
8. Jered Weaver
9. Ian Stewart
10. Carlos Mármol

Round 13
1. Chad Billingsley
2. Francisco Liriano
3. Carlos Quentin
4. Manny Ramírez
5. Brian Wilson
6. Carlos Beltrán
7. Brian Fuentes
8. Ryan Dempster
9. Tim Hudson
10. Erick Aybar

Lots of pitchers with question marks were taken in the middle rounds. Tim Hudson in the 13th round is a possible huge sleeper pick if he can stay healthy. John Lackey moving to the AL East might have a negative affect on his numbers but playing in Boston always gives you chances to pick up wins. Billingsley and Liriano have so much potential and if they could both put together a full season they will be absolute fantasy studs.

Operation 2010

Happy New Year! Actually, not quite. But after the NBA trading deadline it finally is starting to feel like 2010. In actuality, the year 2010 begins on July, 1st 2010 at 12:00am. That is the day when NBA free agency begins. This summer has the most heralded class of free agents in the history of the NBA. Remember the last time this was said? Flash back: 10 years ago the 2000 free agent class included Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, and Tracy McGrady. That year the Chicago Bulls were in the market to land two max contract free agents. And who did the Bulls end up with that year? Ron Mercer. Flash forward: There are a lot of teams making moves in order clear as much cap space as possible for the 2010 free agent class. Here are the free agents that have NBA general managers foaming at the mouth.

Max Contract Players
LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Joe Johnson, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer, and Amare Stoudemire

Restricted Free Agents
Rudy Gay, Tyrus Thomas, Randy Foye, Ronnie Brewer, Nate Robinson, David Lee, Raymond Felton

Veteran Free Agents
Ray Allen, Brad Miller, Shaquille O’Neal, Brendan Haywood, Luis Scola, Travis Outlaw, Jermaine O’Neal, Udonis Haslem, Tracy McGrady, Al Harrington, Marcus Camby, Manu Ginobili, Mike Miller, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Josh Howard

Let’s take a look at which teams will be in position for a max contract player. (For this post I am assuming the salary cap is $53 million and a team must have a minimum of 12 players on their roster)

MIAMI HEAT (3 Players on contract for 2010)
2010-2011 Salary: $7.98 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $45.03 Million

If the Heat fill out their roster with players with minimum salaries that will still leave them about $40 million in space under the cap. That is enough to comfortably offer Wade and another player a max contract. My predication is that Wade resigns in Miami and brings a big man such as Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, or Carlos Boozer. Due to the fact that the state of Florida does not have an income tax Miami will have its pick of the litter. My hope is that Bosh is reluctant to sign in a place where he won’t be the number one option. Nonetheless, someone is getting rich down in South Beach and partying it up with D-Wade. Flip a coin. And…. Amare it is.

NEW YORK KNICKS (5)
2010-2011 Salary: $18.64 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $34.36 Million

The Knicks have had an eye on this 2010 free agent class since Isaiah set out to ruin the team a few years ago. However, they managed to swing a miracle before the deadline and land McGrady’s gigantic expiring contract and with the money they have available, they may be able to sign two max contracts. I have a feeling the New York will give the best push to go after LeBron but will fall short in the end. Thus, the Knicks will end up having to overpay Joe Johnson with a max contract. And then sign a lesser player like Brendan Haywood contract year mega deal. And you have to expect an underachieving PG such as Raymond Felton to get a chance to play no defense in the D’Antoni system.

NEW JERSEY NETS (7)
2010-2011 Salary: $31 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $22 Million

The question is: Does anyone want to play for the Nets? They may end this season with one of the worst records in NBA history. They have played a game this season in front of 1000 people. Yes, 1000. Not a typo. On the other hand, they have two very good young players in Devin Harris and Brook Lopez and with an opportunity for a max contract player that could be right back in playoff contention. At the end of the day the answer is still no. And Jay-Z will only be bringing in an older player like T-Mac to end his career in New Jersey. The Nets could end up with a nice consolation prize with David Lee making the short trip from NY to NJ.

CHICAGO BULLS (6)
2010-2011 Salary: $31.86 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $21.14 Million

Dear god, please oh please let the Bulls land a big free agent this summer. Don’t let the magic of the lucky ping pong ball that is Derrick Rose go to waste. The Chicago Bulls have a nice young core with Rose, Gibson, and Noah along with professionals Hinrich and Deng which should make an interesting landing spot for a big man this summer. The Bulls will put offers out for LeBron and D-Wade but those players won’t be on the move this offseason. So what’s gonna happen? Well, I’m wearing Rose colored glasses and predicting the Bosh will be with the Bulls in 2010.

Cleveland Cavaliers (10)
2010-2011 Salary: $45 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $8 Million

The biggest winners in the 2010 Free Agency class will be the Cavs. And that is for one reason alone. They will indeed resign LeBron James. I have a feeling that they will also bring in Ray Allen for some extra scoring punch and Shaq will be forced to come back for another shot at Kobe and the Lakers. Although, the Cavs will end up paying the luxury tax paying LeBron with his Larry Bird rights I think they will be alright. Plus, they know Big Z will always come back if they want him.

(Teams that need the cap to be 55 million for a max player)

WASHINGTON WIZARDS (8)
2010-2011 Salary: $34 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $19 Million

The Wizards will most likely have to keep this offseason on the cheap since they will have to figure out what to do with disgruntled gunslinger Gilbert Arenas. They will end up resigning Randy Foye as insurance and picking up a Haslem or Harrington for an extra PF.

Sacramento Kings (10)
2010-2011 Salary: $34 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $19 Million

Sacramento is the place where a player lands who only cares about the money. If they go to this team they don’t care at all about winning. Remember, when Carlos Boozer screwed over the Cavs? Well Sacramento may be his basketball purgatory for his indiscretions.

L.A. Clippers (5)
2010-2011 Salary: $35 Million
Estimated Cap Space: $18 Million

With a lineup of Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin and Chris Kaman the Clippers are only missing a young athletic SF. To fill that role in 2010 I introduce to you, Rudy Gay. He should be a fantastic fit on this Clippers team that is hoping for a full recovery from their top young draft pick Blake Griffin.
